John Galliano, Controversy and the Fundraising Power of the 2027 Met Gala

John Galliano’s selection as the subject of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s 2027 Costume Institute exhibition has already generated controversy. But behind the debate—and the celebrity spectacle—is one of the cultural world’s most powerful fundraising events.

Officially known as the Costume Institute Benefit, the Met Gala provides the department with its primary source of annual funding. The event has become a significant fundraising engine, generating a record $42 million in 2026—up from $31 million the previous year—to support exhibitions, acquisitions, publications and department operations.

The gala also serves as the glamorous opening celebration for the Costume Institute’s annual spring exhibition. Each year, designers, entertainers, philanthropists and corporate leaders gather at the museum, creating worldwide media attention that extends far beyond the guest list. That attention promotes the exhibition, attracts visitors and reinforces fashion’s place within art, history and cultural scholarship.

In 2027, the benefit will introduce “John Galliano: Horizons,” a retrospective examining Galliano’s work at his namesake label, Givenchy, Christian Dior and Maison Margiela. The exhibition will also address the antisemitic and racist remarks that led to his dismissal from Dior and legal conviction in France in 2011.

Galliano is not the first controversial designer connected to the gala. The 2023 event honored Karl Lagerfeld despite criticism of his inflammatory public comments. The gala continued, and the accompanying exhibition became one of the museum’s attendance highlights.

That precedent suggests controversy will not diminish the Met Gala’s visibility or fundraising power. It may increase both.

The larger story is how the Met converts fashion, celebrity and exclusivity into support for cultural preservation. The 2027 gala will fund important museum work—but it will also test whether an institution can celebrate creative influence while honestly confronting the harm within its subject’s legacy.
