Jamie and Judy Dimon Commit $12 Million to Strengthen HBCU Endowments

Jamie and Judy Dimon are investing in the long-term financial strength of historically Black colleges and universities.

Through the James and Judith K. Dimon Foundation, the couple has committed $12 million to UNCF, establishing the Dimon Fund to Advance Economic Opportunity. The gift will provide $1 million in permanent endowment support to 12 UNCF-member HBCUs, including Tuskegee University, Dillard University, Benedict College, Johnson C. Smith University and Miles College.

What makes the gift notable is its structure. Instead of funding a one-time program, scholarship cohort or building project, the Dimons are directing capital into institutional endowments—assets designed to generate financial support for colleges year after year.

Many historically Black institutions operate with significantly smaller endowments than predominantly white colleges and universities, limiting their flexibility to invest in faculty, academic programs, student support, facilities and long-term growth. By strengthening permanent capital, the Dimon gift addresses a structural challenge rather than simply underwriting a short-term need.

The contribution also plays a larger role in UNCF’s ambitious capital strategy. Each $1 million allocation is intended to support participating institutions as they work toward larger pooled endowment goals, effectively using the Dimons’ philanthropy as leverage for additional long-term investment.

The 12 participating institutions were also selected with workforce outcomes in mind, particularly their records of preparing students for careers in education, nursing and healthcare. That gives the gift a second layer: strengthening HBCU balance sheets while also expanding pathways into professions where skilled workers are in high demand.

The donation comes from the Dimons personally through their family foundation, not from JPMorgan Chase, where Jamie Dimon serves as chairman and CEO. That distinction is important because it places the commitment within the couple’s personal philanthropic legacy.

Jamie Dimon has also had a longstanding connection to UNCF, including previous service on its board. The foundation’s broader giving has focused on education and economic opportunity, making the HBCU investment consistent with an approach centered on helping young people move from education into sustainable careers.

In a philanthropic landscape where large gifts often arrive with a donor’s name attached to a building, center or highly visible initiative, the Dimons’ approach is comparatively understated.

And for colleges that have historically been expected to do more with less, that may be one of the most consequential investments a donor can make.
